While this project does include upgrades to the existing building, construction of a new wing is critical to allow us to more effectively serve our students. Today, every bit of the historic building is being used and there is simply not enough space to accommodate the educational needs of our students. The new wing will provide additional classrooms and resource rooms to support students through enrichment, tutoring and small group instruction, and the multi-purpose spaces will provide the school community a place to gather, worship, and learn together.
This will actually be the second time in the school’s history that parents have stepped up to ensure future generations have a neighborhood Catholic school on Capitol Hill. In 1935, the DC Fire Department gave notice that due to overcrowding (with 631 students enrolled!) the school would have to be closed in the coming year. Rather than close, in 1936, parents built an addition, which currently houses the main entry way, multipurpose room and administrative offices, and the floors above. Today, parents are leading an effort to meet students’ academic, spiritual, and physical needs, both now and for generations to come.
